  1. Love the work of this author and the sound of this book, but can’t afford to buy it. Will there be paperback/cheaper editions coming out?

    • Hi Marie, you can get the new edition of the book for £7.99, or £6.39 if you are able to order it online via Amazon. This is a smaller sized paperback, and apart from the insertion of one new paragraph on the case of Billy Willan, the text and photographs are exactly the same as the first edition. Best wishes,
      Andy

  2. great research on a forgotten subject

  3. […] If you want to know more about the Scuttlers, check Andrew Davies book ‘The Gangs Of Manchester’. […]

  4. Hi andrew
I was wondering if you had any information on William Henry Brooks, the gang leader on the cover of the book.

    • There is brief biography in chapter 17 of the book (“King of the Scuttlers”). I compiled this from newspaper reports detailing his appearances before Salford magistrates, and the ancestry website, which enabled me to track him to Durham Street in the Greengate district of Salford in the 1891 census. Cheers, Andy

      • Thanks Andrew
Is there any reason in particular why William Henry Brooks was chosen as the central face for the cover of the book

      • Hello Jeff,
The press reports I found suggest that he had more of a reputation that the other young men photographed alongside him, so it seemed to make sense to put him in the middle. Best wishes,
        Andy

  5. Cheers Andrew

  6. Hi Andy. Excellent book. Thanks. Just wondering what became of them all. Do we have any info on, for instance, the post-scuttler life of Brooks? Marriage, jobs, children, date of death etc? Thanks, Simon

    • Thanks, Simon. That’s an interesting question. We could try to track the lives of the people mentioned in the book via Ancestry or Findmypast—that would be a project in itself. I did nearly all of the research for The Gangs of Manchester using the collections of microfilmed newspapers at Salford Local History Library at Peel Park and Manchester Central Library. Some of the local newspapers have since been digitised, which means research can be conducted much more quickly—I’m glad to have worked on the microfilms though as I discovered a lot of incidental information that I’d have missed otherwise. Thanks again for your feedback, I’m really glad you enjoyed the book. Andrew
