The research for The Gangs of Manchester began in 1991. Two articles based on the project were published towards the end of the decade. The first, entitled “Youth gangs, masculinity and violence in late Victorian Manchester and Salford” was published in 1998 in the Journal of Social History, an academic history journal based in the U.S. You can read it here.
A companion piece, entitled “These viragoes are no less cruel than the lads: young women, gangs and violence in late Victorian Manchester and Salford” was published the following year in the British Journal of Criminology, volume 39, issue 1. It’s part of a special issue of the BJC on “Histories of Crime and Modernity”. Unfortunately, the online version of the article is only available with a subscription to Ingenta Connect.
